A New Perspective on Weddings — What’s Old is new Again, Elopement Wedding

When we look through older family albums, we may see a few aged photographs. Grandparents and great-grandparents, older generations on their special wedding days. If we learn about their history, we discover they had small intimate ceremonies at the local Church, or Town Hall, followed by an intimate gathering at the bride’s family home. Perhaps even a garden style reception in the backyard. For Me, It Started With An Appreciation For Art Itself

Any sign that reads ‘Market Place’ gets my immediate attention. I’m always on the lookout for the unique and different, a criteria that has made collecting not only fun, but educational. I began our collection some twenty plus years ago, with a great appreciation for cultural pieces, or ‘cultural appreciation’. Born on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and growing up with a creative Trinidadian mother opened my eyes to the differences between cultures and an appreciation for art itself — A fascination with artwork and decorative pieces goes back to my roots.

Exotic Destinations Lead To A Daily Lesson In Global Art Appreciation

In my twenties, a career at sea and love of travel took me to many exotic destinations. It seemed only natural to collect artworks as a reminder of each place and of how different and unique the world really is. As a result these handmade items grew into a collection that enhances our home with a daily lesson in global art — I have strong ‘cultural appreciation’.

Cultural Appreciation VS Cultural Appropriation

In an era of being politically correct, cultural appreciation is easily misunderstood for cultural appropriation. When iconic artifacts and cultural items are misused it is important that we understand these sensitivities and be respectful of the heritage of others. It is always a first consideration, and when we know more about the item’s history we can avoid misuse.

Examples Across Cultures

For example, the teepee or tipi is a tent well known as an Indigenous shelter. As Canadians, we may immediately associate the original teepee shape with the indigenous peoples of North America. But the tripod tent structure is not unique to Canada. Most indigenous peoples from around the globe used a similar conical structure for shelter. Easy to construct with timbers braced at the top forming a conical shape, the base then formed a wide circle.

Traditionally covered with animal skins, the shelter offered protection from the elements with openings to enter by. Warm in winter, cool in summer, offering protection from rain, It was the chosen dwelling for the family in a native community. The structure was commonly used because it was portable and easy to construct. Many nomadic tribes embraced its use for these same reasons.

In other cultures similar conical or tripod style dwellings were known by other names. For example, in northern Siberia it was called a ‘Chum’. In Finland it was a ‘Kota’. Drawing from my dad’s Norwegian heritage, it was called a ‘Gamme’ and in Sweden a ‘Kata’. Today, the traditional tipi can be covered with canvas and is sometimes decorated with symbolic motifs representing significant aspects of native life and culture. These dwellings are to be respected for their importance within the Native Communities.

Embracing The Beauty & Design In A Luxury Picnic Setting

In the design and art world, elements are arranged in a certain manner to create a particular mood and flow. These arrangements are referred to as following the ‘line of design’. They can be laid out as following ‘S’ and ‘C’ curves, as triangular shapes forming a tripod, or arranged in circles.  When creating our picnic style events, we can see how these design shapes visually add to the overall appeal of our picnics. Setting up our events under a simple triangular structure offer a sense of invisible cover, embraces a sense of wilderness and being one with nature.  Drawing on the association of ‘family and togetherness’ just as native peoples got from their Teepee tents, we create a positive visual for the outdoor dining experience.

Design Styles That Stimulate the Senses

For those that enjoy interior design and creating a sense of style in their homes, we also pay attention to changing decor styles. Today we ‘Stylists’ tend to embrace nature and a use a more neutral palette. Textures and patterns play a major role as they add important visual interest. Pulling it all together takes time and effort, not to mention an eye for creating a unique look that offers stimulation for each of our five senses.

The Execution

How do we do this you might ask? First we decide on the mood and take it from there. Embracing nature is not limited to trees and the outdoors alone. As I traveled, I also learned that each culture had their own unique way to work with natural resources to create their artworks, artifacts and iconic items. Certain available materials such as natural fibres, shells, beads, woods, metals and minerals each played a part in their cultural decorations. Each group designed around these natural resources, and often became identifiable through their creations. For example, Saris are globally associated with Far Eastern Indian women. The hula grass skirt is associated with the Hawaiian culture. That said, are we limited by culture to not appreciate and incorporate the beautiful colours and beadwork of sari fabrics into our own design styles? Of course we can, as long as it doesn’t degrade the original history of the object.

We live in a global world with shared cultures, diverse populations and open trade markets. It stands to reason that as we move forward, we will embrace and adapt, be inspired and share our individual cultures for the sake of beauty and art — cultural appreciation.
